The Eight Stages of Human Development Essays - 1793 Words

According to Erikson, human development occurs in eight stages though-out life. At each stage, individuals work through transitional conflicts a necessary mean of development by undertaking certain developmental tasks (Nugent, 2005, p. 99). The theories of Erik Erkson were used to analyze and interpret the responses. The middle adult chosen for this case study was Mr. Dave Day. Mr. Day is a fifty-four year old. He is of African –American decent. He is a divorcee, with four grown daughters and six grandchildren- three grandsons and three granddaughters. Mr. Days was a Christian at birth and converted to Muslim faith for the pass fifteen years. He is the oldest of three children born to a single mother. He has a brother and sister.†¦show more content†¦It is logical to conclude that these similar characteristics will affect other aspects of life, namely interpersonal relationships. I conclude that birth order had a major influence on the types of relationships Mr. Day had with his family. It appears that Mr. Day’s family life can be described by sociocultural theory defined by Vygotsky. The family cultural influenced his cognitive development. I asked Mr. Day where he lived; his reply was Independence Height of Houston. Then he moved to the Houston Heights were his home is today. I believe that the stable up bring rooted Mr. Day. He grow up with the same friends and neighbors which is similar to that of a village. His life was better rounded because he did not move around and have to make new friends. Children suffer when their world is continually changed. He has security in his family as well as his community. When the cognitive beliefs, values, attitudes, and metaphors about self and others are balanced, rational, and optimistic, our expectations of life will usually be positive. I asked Mr. Day to tell me about his elementary school years. For the first time Mr. Day seemed troubled. He said there was a teacher that did not like him and he struggle for the next three years. He did not explain why he felt the teacher did not like him, but I felt there was something to it. I believe this was his first real sign of mistrust in people.
